V. Burn Injury - Effect of Loss of Extracellular Matrix

The degree of burn injury is based on 1) the depth of the necrosis of the epidermis and dermis and 2) the size and portion of the body which has been burned, usually defined as the percent (%) of the total body surface (TBS).

Subsequent wound surface inflammation (especially on the wound which has not been closed with a bioactive product) can increase wound depth.

Even a partial thickness reduces the effectiveness of skin function, A partial thickness burn destroys the entire epidermal barrier as well as destroys a portion of dermal function until healed. A full thickness burn eliminates both epidermal and dermal functions until the wound is closed.
