E: TIME COURSE |
|
Nutritional intake is required only in this time course and until the
catabolic state has resolved and any malnutrition and involuntary
weight loss has been corrected, especially any protein or lean mass
losses.
The time
course of the increased energy and protein demands is weeks to
months, depending on the insult. Patients are usually discharged
before resolution of the
“stress response”. Nutritional support
needs to be continued in the post-discharge patient until the
recovery phase has been initiated and prior energy and protein
losses can be restored. |
|

The degree and
the time course of the hypermetabolic state are shown. The process
can persist for weeks to months. |
|
|
|

The rate and
time course protein breakdown is shown using Nitrogen loss in the
urine as a marker. This process can last weeks to months. |
|
|
|
The addition
of further anabolic stimuli, especially resistance exercise and
anabolic hormones can assist in optimizing nutrition, correcting
malnutrition, attenuating catabolism and any lean mass loss. |
|
 |
|
Legend:
The rate
of protein loss is 5 times faster than the rate of restoration after
a burn injury. However, the addition of an anabolic agent to
nutrition markedly increases lean mass restoration. |
