HIGH TENSION ELECTRICAL BURNS


PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH TENSION INJURY

  • Typical “entrance” site is shown.  
  • Note concave appearance of  hand
  • Burn reflecting dessication of tissue    

 

  • Exit sites from 1500 volt exposure.
  • Punctuate like holes are characteristic of current exiting at the grounded area.
  • This patient is an automatic admission preferably to a Burn Center

 

  • Entrance site for 25,000 volt exposure.
  • Hand and forearm is mummified. High heat
  • production is evident with deep burn at elbow. 

 

  • Fasciotomy being performed. 
  • Evidence of bulging muscle in compartment.                                 
  • Note normal looking skin on top

   

  • Fasciotomy completed above “exit”.
  • Note bulging devitalized muscle hidden beneath normal skin.
  • Myoblobinuria:
  • Evidence of severe muscle necrosis and need to flush kidneys.
