Introduction
The negative impact of a nutrient deficiency state on overall health and on local wound healing has been recognized for over a century. Yet protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and the chronic nonhealing wound remain common problems.
The purpose of this monograph is to present current concepts of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a protein-energy deficit in both the acute and chronic wound populations.
Optimum use of macronutrients, especially protein, and micronutrients, and the role of anabolic stimulants will be presented in a manner readily adaptable to clinical use.
