Preventing Burns

Before the parents leave

Write down the following information of a piece of paper:
  • The telephone number where the parents can be reached
  • The telephone number of the fire and police department (if other than 911)
  • The telephone number and address of two (2) neighbors
  • The address of the house or apartment where you are babysitting, including the names of the major streets nearby
Place this piece of paper in your pocket or sock and don't leave it by the telephone. If you have to get out of the house quickly, you'll need this information.

If cooking or feeding HOT FOOD, remember the following:
  • Never allow a child to stand on a chair to "help" you cook, they can fall onto stove and get burned
  • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove to keep children from grabbing them and pulling the hot food onto themselves
  • Don't leave hot items within reach of children
  • Don't carry hot foods or liquids over children. You can accidentally spill it. causing a burn
  • Don't hold small children while eating or drinking hot foods

If something on the stove catches fire:
  • Don't try to pick the pan and move it or throw it out the door because you might drop it or a child or it could be blown back on you
  • Don't turn on the exhaust fan because it will make the fire bigger
  • Don't put water on a grease fire as it will spread the flames (use baking soda to put out the grease fire safely
  • Put the lid back on the burning pot as this will smothers the flames

If bathing children:
  • Never allow children to run their own bath water. You run it, and check the temperature to make sure it is not too hot
  • Put a bath or meat thermometer in the tub to check the water temperature
  • Never leave a small child alone in a tub for any reason

Partial thickness burn from a hot liquid spill

In case of fire:
Take charge and do the following:
  • get the children out of the house immediately

  • close the door and go to the neighbors
  • call the fire department
  • call the children's parents ( you have the telephone number)
  • don't go back into the house until the fire department says that it is safe

BABYSITTING IS AN IMPORTANT & SERIOUS RESPONSIBILITY
