  1. Important Facts to know

  • Every 15 seconds a fire department responds to a fire in the United States.

  • A residential fire occurs every 60 seconds.

  • There is one civilian fire death every 2 hours.

  • There is one civilian fire injury every 18 minutes.

Fire Requires fuel, heat, and Oxygen

  • The Fuel can be anythig that burns, especially flammable liquids, wood or clothing.

  • The Oxygen is the air. The more air that is moving hrough the fire, the paster and hotter the fire will burn.

  • The Heat is initiated by the combustion of the fuel. As the temperature rises, fuel is more rapidly consumed and the fire will move faster and faster.

Common sites of fires in the home

  • Kitchen

    - cooking: hot liquids, fires

    - appliance: malfunction, inappropriate use

  • Living room

    - cigarettes, fireplace, faulty electrical

  • Bedroom

    - cigarettes, faulty electrical

  • Storage areas

    - flammable materials

Common Causes

  • Electrical wiring malfunction

  • Smoldering cigarettes

  • Faulty appliances

  • Cooking accidents

  • Fireplace or Bar-B-Q sparks
